How Do I Convince My Parents to Marry at a Young Age?

marry at a young age

Getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and will hold a special place in every couple’s hearts. Even though you can choose your own partners, your parents may be stuck in the norms of traditions, culture, and society. And this is where the conflict begins!

Indeed, love is a child’s game. We know it in our minds, yet our hearts always overpower the desire to be with that special someone. After being together for a while, we realize that we share the same ideals and vision with that person and that the next step is to tie the knot and spend the rest of your lives with them.

You may be too young to say “I do,” but is it possible to convince your parents to marry young? In this article, we’ll help you convince your parents in a few steps.

Spend Time with Your Parents

Spending quality time with your parents will bring a strong connection and be at ease in each other’s company. This will make it much easier to talk about your life with them. Before you even mention marriage, focus on your relationship with your parents by making time to talk to them daily.

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. Having a simple family dinner together can go a long way as it’s great to feel involved while catching up on each other’s lives. If you do not live together with your parents, phone calls and FaceTime can make you feel closer and connected. Make sure to stay in touch and maintain your relationship with your parents.

Ask What They Feel about Marriage

To find out what your parents think about marriage, all you need is to have a good talk with them. Just ask anything about it! You can ask curious questions like “How do you make a marriage successful?” Or “Hey, Mom/Dad, what’s your view on arranged marriages?”

However, the important part is that when they start to pour out their thoughts, don’t reply and go all in if their opinions don’t align with what you want. Everyone has their own opinions, and that should be okay. And remember to be respectful and listen to your parents.

Share Your View on Marriage with Them

How do you convince your parents to marry young without hurting them? If you’re entirely sure about it, bringing up the topic of marriage with your parents would be fine. After all, every parent wants to see their children happily married sooner or later.

Try casually mentioning marriage during an ongoing conversation to broach the subject. This can help you indirectly express what matters to you when looking for a partner, whether it’s compatibility, education, or support. You can also mention things that don’t matter, like community, etc.

This will let your parents understand your perspective on marriage. They may react in a way you won’t expect but remember to maintain an open mind and polite conversation with them. Remember to avoid being too repetitive and give them time to think about it. Most importantly, don’t be rebellious during these talks. Instead, try to emphasize your thoughts and philosophy of being married.

It’s a gradual process, but with patience and understanding, you’ll slowly have common ground with your parents.

Ensure You are Financially Independent

If you decide to marry young, it’s important that you and your partner are prepared to support yourselves. Spend some time assessing your financial situation before you make any announcements. If you likely have trouble covering basic living expenses like rent and food, it might be a sign that you aren’t ready for marriage yet.

Sit down with your partner and have an open conversation regarding their financial condition. It’s important to ensure that both of you are on the same page on managing money within your household. By talking about your financial expectations and goals, you can create a solid foundation for financial stability in your marriage.

Bring Up Your Partner during a Conversation with Your Parents

Have you even talked about your little secret to your parents? You’re confident with who you’re dating and want to tie the knot while young! However, before you drop the news, remember to tell them you are serious about your relationship. Do it slowly by bringing up your partner in conversations with your parents.

Think of the specific moments where you can mention your partner’s name. For example, while watching a Netflix series, you can casually say, “Oh, he loves this show! We watched it together last month.” This indirectly lets your parents be more familiar with your partner and slowly get comfortable with your relationship.

You can also share snippets of activities you’ve been doing with your partner. For example, tell your parents how delicious the food was last night at a restaurant you visited, and tell them that they should try it out. However, remember not to overdo it as your parents may be annoyed and feel you have nothing else to talk about.

Talk about Your Partner’s Strengths

How do you convince parents to marry young positively? By telling them that your partner is ready to marry too! Take some time to highlight their strengths and give them a sneak peek of the qualities your soon-to-be spouse possesses.

Mention your partner’s positive traits, including their kindness and how they always treat you with love. Share their achievements and how they’re doing well at work. And most importantly, mention their strong bond with their parents, highlighting how important family is to them.
